Accelerating Built Environment Decarbonisation

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a body created by the United Nations to provide policymakers worldwide with regular scientific assessments on climate change, its implications and potential future risks, released on 9 August 2021 the Sixth Assessment Report.

While the extensive, 1800-page report addresses the most up-to-date physical understanding of the climate system and climate change, combining multiple lines of evidence from a variety of disciplines, one outcome is clear: there is an urgent need to ramp up sustainable development. Stakeholders across the built environment value chain will also become more sensitive to carbon emissions, especially embodied carbon emissions which cannot be improved over the lifetime of a building, unlike operational carbon emissions.

The September 2021 issue of SG Green features a collection of content that cover a variety of topics related to built environment decarbonisation including an overview of embodied carbon emissions, carbon credits, a materials passport and getting sustainability going with Green Energy Tech.
